If one decides to take a tour through the very heart of the Rhodopi Mountain, soon he will find himself under the magical influence of its extraordinary beauty. Approximately an hour past Bulgaria’s second largest city—Plovdiv, upstream the Chepelarska
river is the charming small town of Chepelare. Situated at an average height of 1150 meters above sea level, Chepelare is one of the highest Bulgarian towns.
Chepelare is situated 80 km away from the regional center Plovdiv,230 km away from the capital city Sofia and 22 km from the district center Smolyan and is one of the first places in Bulgaria where skiing has started.

Chepelare ski resort has recently gained popularity among local and foreign skiers. The ski area in Chepelare is quite smaller than the ski areas in Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets ski resorts, but also the number of skiers is much lesser. A great advantage of the resort are the low prices - 20-30% lower than the other bulgarian ski resorts both for accommodation and ski packages. Chepelare winter resort is 70 km away from Plovdiv and only 11 km away from Pamporovo ski resort.
There are 2 main ski runs in Chepelare ski area:
• Mechi Chal 1 is a black level ski run and is 3150 meters long and 50 meters wide with a total elevation change of 720 meters and is qualified to be used for international competitions.
• Mechi Chal 2 is a combination red/green ski run that is 5250 meters long and 25 meters wide with a total elevation change of 720 meters.
Since 2008, the ski centre has reached it's revival with the construction of one of the most modern lifts in Europe. It has a capacity of over 2000 pax. per hour, which currently is more then the hotel beds in the town and guaranties smooth and queues free operation of the lift. The lift connects the town of Chepelare with the Mechi Chal peak in just 9 minutes, at a 2700 meters distance.
